Ryan Lochte confirmed, via a twitter post, that he and his teammates were robbed at gunpoint during the early morning hours this past Sunday.

Lochte tweeted, “While it is true that my teammates and I were the victims of a robbery early Sunday morning, what is most important is that we are safe and unharmed.”

There were several reports, which had not yet been confirmed, that four Americans were robbed while heading back to the Olympic Village.

According to USA Today, a spokesman with the International Olympic Committee denied the reports and called them “absolutely not true.”

Lochte’s mother, Lleana Lochte, and U.S. Olympic Committee Spokesman Patrick Sandusky later came out and confirmed the earlier reports.

Ryan Lochte said that the robbers pulled over he and his teammates’ (Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger, and Jimmy Feigen) taxi and ordered them out of the vehicle.

First he refused but then he complied after one of the robbers "pointed a gun to his head."

Lochte said that his money and wallet were taken, but that he still had his cellphone and Olympic credentials.

USA Today reported that Rio Civil Police is investigating the incident.
